What is PRP Pro Therapy?

PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma and refers to blood that is very rich in platelets.

Platelets within your blood help with blood clot formation. They also stimulate the cells to produce new tissue as quickly as possible and therefore help with the healing of wounds.

As a form of therapy, PRP is taken from the patient’s own body and is applied to a part of the body that requires healing. PRP therapy has been used for years in hospitals but with the advances of technology, it can now be used within dentistry.

At Reading Smiles, we use PRP pro therapy to help accelerate the healing after dental implant surgery. It can also be used within bone grafting procedures which are used as part of the dental implant process. If you book a consultation with us to discuss dental implants, your dentist may mention the use of PRP pro therapy as a way of boosting your recovery.

Reasons for using Platelet Rich Plasma pro therapy ?

As the blood used within PRP pro therapy comes from the patient’s own body there are several benefits:

  • Safe and convenient – a small amount of blood is needed and can be easily collected during a routine procedure. The treatment is completely safe as it uses the blood from your own body. There is no chance of a bad reaction as the treatment works with your own body
  • Accelerated healing – The wound is covered with PRP which results in fast tissue regeneration. This means quicker healing and less chance of developing infections and complications later. It also means you will feel less discomfort. Recovery should be faster.
  • Lower risk of infection – PRP is used to cover the surgical wound which helps to seal it and lower the risk of infection

What does PRP pro therapy involve?

The dentist will firstly determine whether you are suitable for PRP pro therapy treatment. Certain patients such as those who suffer with blood clotting disorders will be unable to use this treatment.

A small sample of your blood is collected at the surgery. This is a quick and painless procedure.

Your blood is treated to separate the plasma from the red blood cells. Once the dental implant surgery is complete, your blood sample containing the concentrated platelets, is applied to the surgical area which will promote healing at a faster rate and decrease the amount of discomfort during recovery.
