What Are Icon White Spots On Teeth?

White spots, especially on front teeth, are quite common. You may know someone who has them, or you may even have them on your own teeth.

White spots on teeth are ordinarily a loss of mineral content on the surface of the teeth (the enamel).

Initially people may believe their teeth have become stained, therefore they opt for teeth whitening, But unfortunately teeth whitening products cannot change the appearance of white spots, as they will still remain a lighter shade of white compared to the rest of the tooth.

What Causes White Spots On Teeth?

White spots can be caused by many issues such as:

  • Trauma/illness – any trauma or illness experience as a child may lead to white spots on adult teeth.
  • Decalcification of the enamel – this is the loss of minerals from the enamel. This can occur due to due to poor cleaning, allowing the acid in the plaque to sit on the enamel structure long enough that it starts leeching out the calcium from the enamel. Wearing braces can increase decalcification due to the difficulty in brushing under and around the brackets. Dry mouth may also cause areas of decalcification.
  • Fluorosis -Consuming too much fluoride as a child when the permanent teeth are being formed can lead to fluorosis, resulting in discolouration or enamel spots.

Previously these teeth white spots could be covered up with either porcelain veneers or composite filling material. However both of these cosmetic treatment options usually require drilling to remove the white part of a healthy tooth, and therefore not favoured by many dentists.

Icon is a white spot removal treatment which doesn’t involve any drilling or removal of a healthy part of tooth.

This works by infiltrating the pores of the tooth where the white spot is located via a tooth-coloured resin. A special gel is applied to the white spot to open up the pores, to enable a deep penetration of the resin.

The resin is then light-cured, while the white spot infiltrated by the resin takes on the appearance of the surrounding healthy enamel.

The resin also blocks acids that can make enamel wear away, and it can help preserves the tooth from additional decay. This results in a beautiful, healthy and aesthetically pleasing all over white smile.
